Cristiano Ronaldo has underlined his growing disregard for Manchester United by saying that he is prepared to upset Sir Alex Ferguson to secure a world-record transfer to Real Madrid. The Portugal forward has made clear his determination to move to the Spanish club, who will make an opening bid for him within days, and yesterday he revealed that he has not spoken to Ferguson for several weeks while listening to the advice of Luiz Felipe Scolari, the new Chelsea manager.
Ronaldo declared within moments of Portugal's elimination from the European Championship finals by Germany on Thursday that he hopes to join Real and while a formal statement to that effect is expected to follow over the weekend, he continued his propaganda mission yesterday, adding that he had made his decision to leave United before the Champions League final win over Chelsea last month and that Scolari, who has stood down as Portugal coach to take over at Stamford Bridge the week after next, has urged him to accept the opportunity of a lifetime in Spain.
Ferguson maintains that United will not sell Ronaldo, who has four years left on a contract worth £120,000 a week, but when asked whether he was worried that his plan to join Real would upset his manager, the player said: “It is my opinion. That is why I don't mind if people get upset. It is my decision. It is what I want. I don't know what I have to say to him. I have to say what I want and what I think.”
Ronaldo added that he had not spoken to Ferguson since joining up with the Portugal squad more than three weeks ago, saying: “I was in a very important competition and we had nothing to say to each other.”
But even after Portugal's elimination, Ronaldo said that his preferred course of action was to issue a statement “and we will then see what happens.” The only immediate contact he is planning with anyone at United is with the club's medical staff, whom he will ask to prescribe surgery to cure a foot injury that he has been carrying for the past three months.
Although Ronaldo has not been in communication with Ferguson, who has been on holiday in the South of France, the player has been more willing to seek advice from Scolari, who may have a vested interest in the player's movements now that he is about to take charge of Chelsea.
“It [moving to Real] is a dream, a step forward, you can call it what you want,” Ronaldo said. “For me it is a great opportunity and, as Scolari says, that train passes by only once and we have to take advantage of it. That is why he took advantage of his change. Other people have to take advantage of opportunities, too.”
Ronaldo's next step will be to issue a statement over the weekend, in which he is expected to talk of the commitment he has shown, the performances he has produced and the trophies he has won for United over the past five seasons and to ask for their blessing to allow him to join Real.
That statement will be followed by a scheduled meeting of the Real hierarchy on Tuesday, after which Predrag Mijatovic, the Spanish club's sporting director, will be urged to open formal negotiations with David Gill, the United chief executive.
United responded to Ronaldo's comments by issuing a statement yesterday morning saying that he is “not for sale” and that the club are “not listening to offers”, which is in keeping with their stance since Ronaldo shocked them by stating on May 15 that he was planning to make an announcement about his future.
Initially, Ferguson and Gill suspected that Ronaldo was merely angling for an improved contract, but it has become increasingly clear that the player is serious about his intention to pursue his “dream” of playing for Real.
i think that if he wants to leave then sir ferguson should let him go. it makes no sense in holding on to him if he doesn't want to play for the club. sell him and buy someone who will be better than him, although we have that in nani and anderson.
jevon, portmore, jamaica
hi,guys what is the problem? let the young lad go if he thinks that what is going to give him joy. but he should remember the stories of micheal owen, david beckam, makalele, louis figo, ronaldo and a host of others. how did they leave Real madrid, his will not be different. sell him for 100m pds.
othman, Jos Nigeria, jos, nigeria
hi! i trongly believe that ronaldo should go. He does not want to play with MANUTD any more. Let him go and we'll see if he's done a good deal. Wish him good luck and hope that no other team will offer more than Real Madrid. he will have a big head ache
Josian , Rose Hill, Mauritius
Man Utd should let go of Ronaldo.. Having a selfish player like him can only spread discontent in the team.. Its better to have players with a lot more loyalty towards the club..
Vivek, Bangalore, India
if ronaldo wanted to go to real, let him go.because i think this kind of player is a selfish and doesn't know how to appreciate team that change him to a world class footballer.when first time he come to man u,he's just a little boy that knew nothing.to Man U,let the money boy go & find other player.
arie, johor bharu, malaysia
so Ronaldo doesn't need Fergie ! well Ronnie, Manchester United don't need you. OK, you scored 42 goals for us last season but you aint bigger than Man U, At times brilliant, often petulant, banging your fists on the turf like a baby. are Real really better than Man U ? You go, Utd will move on !
peter thomas, Manchester,
Whoever is offended by Ronaldo´s desire to move forward should remember Manchester also picked him up at Sporting for a couple of millions. Was he a Manchester fan in the first place? don´t think so. English football is all about money, so don´t pretend it´s about feelings and team passion.
HR, Braga,Portugal,
Where was Ronaldo in the match against Germany?
T.Andre, London,
I would support ronaldo's desire to move if he hadn't signed a long-term contract with united. to expect both security and flexibility is asking too much. if he were that confident in his own ability, he should have signed for a year only. what exactly would madrid have to do to get penalised?
jem, london, uk
Real Madrid only good on looking and snatching a good soccer STAR but once they join in the club they only becoming a "STARFRUIT JUICE", let Ronaldo go with a higher rates ever to Real Madrid, used it by producing more talented younger soccer player and yet Ronaldo in his way of failure
noraa, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
The funny thing is that poll after poll shows that Real Madrid supporters do not want Ronaldo in the squad. He is perceived as selfish, arrogant and not up to the task when it comes to playing in big matches.
Pedro Jarque, Madrid,
Ron has been great for MU, but if a player wants to go he should. MU should put a price of 100M on him, if RM want him bad they will pay. He is a great player, but 4 players for 25M should fill the gap no prob.
Peter Hodkinson, Adelaide, Australia
He has scored more than 40 goals in one season for Man United. To say he is not brilliant would be losing perspective. Yes he appears arrogant but this does not impinge on his talent and to all those people saying stick him on the bench for four years are you really so hateful as to waste talent?
v.p., london,
Just accept it guys, Man U are normally the "big" club poaching talent but this time a bigger club has stepped in!
Neil, Birmingham, U.K
Ronaldo already in dream to Real....So just let him go....
Who knows another cantona will shine in OT soon...
Peter Raj, USJ, Malaysia
Ronaldo has the right to join Madrid if he so wishes. The question is whether he has given back to United the investment in him by since he was 17. If not then he may be just another example of how materialism threatens most aspects of life including sports. He may not be as succesful at Madrid..
joe sanna, Nairobi, Kenya
Both Ronaldo and Ferguson are right., and both should better leave Man U now. Ferguson is too old to win anything else without Ronaldo, and Man U are not creative enough to make money out of Ronaldo. Buying younger talents with fees from stars is just the character of inferior clubs.
Wilfred, Dar es Salaam, TANZANIA
If he saw himself as the last piece of the jigsaw in a team that is on the brink perhaps of dominating the Champions League for the next five years I could undesrtand it, but this is not the case. Once again Real appear to back at the drawing board. He is walking away from the best team in Europe4$$
Morgan, New York,
Ronaldo should not leave because he is the best player and aslo would not no if the players at Real Madrid would like him because they might be jealous of him that he is better than the players at Real Madrid.manchester united is better for him and best place him to top soccer
ronson, jurong, singapore
It's time that a club stuck to their guns and enforced the contract. If Man U can afford to pay him but not play him for 4 years, why not? I doubt if his career would ever recover from it.
David Postle, London, England
He has had three seasons now at Manchester United and it is time to move on, he is the best player in the world hence any team would love to have him on there team. It is a big decision but a top team like Real Madrid is a big team, Fergie shoukd just let him go! 78million a player who wants to move
Joshua, Neston,
Ronaldo, you can pay back Man U what you owe them by earning them a huge transfer fee. Man U could take this money and invest in their youth system. Man U would earn more respect if they sharpen their coaching skills, and create their own stars again. It would make them a better club.
Daisuke, Tokyo,
honouring contracts should be done by both parties - the player and the club. If barcelona can kick ronaldinho out in2008 even if his contract runs till 2010 so can ronaldo not honor Man U's contract out now because I'm sure if he loses his
s form next year Man U will be the first ppl to offloadhim
Manoj, london, UK
Let him leave. Witness his failures in high level games. United have had to live with his lack of morality. Giggs, Scholes, Solskjaer, Keane- TRUE LEGENDS. Ronaldo - a technically brilliant player with a major attitude problem. Buy 3 Rooneys, because that's what they can get for £80 million.
Nick, London, England
leave him on the bench for four yrs if he cant stand by a club which has supported him through everything!! Typical case of a player believing all his hype., (man u fan thru and thru)
Dean, Lincoln, uk
the reasons why Ronaldo should go: so that there will be a chance for other players to shine. like Thierry, after he left arsenal, Fabregas, Rosicky, came to shine. before when we talked abt arsenal our mind was always on thierry. If ronaldo leaves, then i am sure Nani, rooney, anderson, will shine
Almanzo, Dili, Timor Leste
Chelsea's vested interest is that, if Ronaldo goes to Real for $60m, the $30m they paid for Shevcenko will no longer be the worst transfer deal in history! At least Shevcenko was a great player - once! In time Ronaldo will be shown to be the grossly over-rated player that he is.
Peter, Wellington, New Zealand
Ferguson has confused sentiment with business, and in my opinion has made a hash of this.I would be amazed if the little twerp replicates a season like we have just seen, but he doesnt 'owe' the club anything. He should be sold at the highest extracted price, but how the chewing gum knight save face
Paul, CHESTER, England
I totally agree with Terry Venables article in The Sun. Man Utd can rescue football from this greedy attitude where big headed players have total disrespect for contracts to the point where they are worthless pieces of paper. Keep him in the stands until his contract expires then chuck him out
Sean, Brisbane, Australia
Ronaldo says he made his mind up before the CL final. So how does Scolari fit into all this? I would guess he is simply agreeing with most MU supporters in saying if he wants to go, let him go etc etc. Scolari has faced better players before, showed no fear and swept all before him.
Sean, Brisbane, Australia
I'm sure Van Nistleroy will be over the moon to be playing with the man who caused him to leave United
Jim, Manchester,
I venture to forcast Ronaldo's tally in Spain would be around ten but not the phenomenal thirty plus.
kafka, HK,
If ronaldo made his mind up, to join real Madrid, before the CL final, then this must mean, that he was contacted by Real Madrid, long before the Champions Leauge Final. He is not going to get much better than he is now.
Hope we can buy russias nr 10 and berbatov.
In RM ronaldo will not be the star
GAGA Jepuri, Rio De Janeiro, Brasil
Ferguson acted like a child on his declarations and now he's surely regretting this.
Anyway Real Madrid is so far bigger than any other club and it's for this that always great players want to play on it. Ronaldo deserve to be a white player so he can go a step ahead in his career...
Nafie, Rabat, Morocco
People speak about Barcelona ?? I'm wondering if they are really in good shape... 1st bcs Barcelona haven't cash, 2nd Because Barcelona must rebuild all the team with medium class players.. 3rd bcs Barcelona isn't Real Madrid !!
Nafie, Rabat, Morocco
If his heart's not in it and his mind is elsewhere then Gill may as well crack a good deal with Mijatovic and clear some of that obscene debt.
Morse, Highbury,
I say Utd should sell him to Barcelona just to show Real we mean business. But we need to sell him, and buy some good young Englishmen. And of course I agree with Daz. Because Scolari knows he can't beat Utd. if we have Ronaldo, he tries to get him out of England. Bottom Line: Ronaldo needs to go!
Michael, Spokane, WA, USA
Ronaldo is making a mistake here. He's admired by fans and by Ferguson himself. He's still young and can move to Real Madrid two yeras later....but Man Utd' s loss will be Chelsea's gain next season...
Arpit Mehta, Ahmedabad, India
United should sell him and take the money. We are talking about a mind boggling amount. No player is bigger than a club the stature of Manchester United. There are ten other Ronaldos out there waiting in the wings. I would say this is a "dream move" for United.
Morgan Yang, Singapore, Singapore
Rooney's development has been sacrificed for Ronaldo. Without Ronaldo, Rooney and Tevez would produce. Either take the cash, or make a point, but either way, keep him out of the team, now the spirit is broken.
John, Hove,
He is a very good player and United must get the right price for him. Besides sport and fun, football is also big busines. A relevant Greek saying: If the Monastery is well there are always monks available. I hope that we will get good transfers this year like Carick, Hargreaves, Nani and Anderson
Yannis, London,
I'd sell Him.
But not to Real Madrid.
Most of the price should still be realised but discipline in the team would be retained.
David Martin, Bristol,
Of course Scolari wants him to go to Real and weaken Manu as he is becoming the Chelsea boss!
Daz, London,
Ronaldo owes United one more season, to make up for the title or European Cup he probably cost them when he first came, and caused Ruud V-N to be offside several dozen times instead of being in on goal by doing his unnecessary, ain't-I-cute? stepover moves.
Eric Richard, Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA
You say he didn´t do nothing for manchester but who scored 40 goals?? and it was not ferguson who made him what he is now. Ronaldo worked a lot and the majority of what he is now is due to him. So don´t say that he doesn´t deserve to go to real because it is his Dream and what he work for.
Joao Calado, Funchal, Portugal
It highlights the lengths Scolari will go to to wrestle supremecy from Manchester United. Scolari cannot justify his advice on footballing terms. The only plus for playing in Spain is the weather.
Ben, Manchester,
Ronaldo is good i admit but he isn't brilliant all the time. most people just think he is good cozz they have seen all the compilations on youtube of him but how many times has he performed in big matches, i can probably count on one hand. and even if he does go they've still got nani
simon, henley, england
Ronaldo ...although a great player...is not bigger than the club...i say let him go..watch him regret his decicion as United strive forward ...are we forgettin we have Nani..Rooney...and the rest of our great players.....he is not goin to be happy to stay...let him go..
jackie, new ross, ireland
"Where was he in all the big Champions League and Premiership games?"
He scored in the final
mark, newcastle, england
A contract does not have the same significance as it did many years ago. A contract is now used to protect the value of a player and in this case that is a good thing for man utd. Too many people on here seemingly don't realise that.
Andy, liverpool, england
So what ! he wants to go, That his choice He's following his Dreams, he's won everything with Man U and now needs a new challenge. Man U now know how it feels to loose the hearth of a good player.Without Rolnald they can't win trophies anyway Man U do this to other clubs why
are they now moaning
Femi , Morden, UK
Please, Man Utd fans, stop deluding yourselves into believing loyalty has any place in football. This sort of thing happens all the time to every club, from bottom to top. Money talks and players walk. It will be a good bit of business for Man Utd. Which is exactly what football is, a business.
andrew, darlington,
"It [moving to Real] is a dream, a step forward, you can call it what you want"
Yes because Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Beckham and Robinho all flourished and reached their true potential in the Serie A... no, wait, they all got slower and became worse players...
Graeme, Edinburgh,
Probably Scolari doing his job as Chelsea Manager even before joining Chelsea by asking Ronaldo to quit Manchester United( Chelsea's Rival)
Andrews Arokiam, Neyveli, India
The point from a United perspective is whether they will continue to be successful in the Premier League and Champion's League without Ronaldo's playmaking.
If Real used their influence to assist United in signing a replacement (Kaka?), then maybe the deal would go more smoothly.
Luke, Toulouse, France
Considering Ferguson is the most ruthless manager in football, dumping players on whim or necessity regardless of their loyalty or history, it will be interesting to see his reaction to Ronaldo's move.
But its only a game involving children and a pigs bladder. Gawd we must lead empty lives.
Paul, London, uk
Perhaps Ronaldo is not clever enough to question why Scolari would suggest he leave Manchester - now Scolari's most important rival. Hmmm - could Scolari have been looking to disrupt Chelsea's main competition in the premier league by inciting Manchester's 40+ goalscorer from last season to move?
Tony, Dublin, Ireland
The first reaction is let him go and good riddance. But you would also want to retain him, not only becasue he is a great palyer, but to make an example of him. He is just one year through his contract, and commitments should be respected. Someone has to put one's foot down on player power.
John, malta, Malta
Now is a great time to cash in on a player who has peaked early. There is no chance that he will reproduce the form of last season and as for the Champions League, buy Kaka.
Terry, Radstock, England
Van Nistleroy, Beckham and now Ronaldo. Three of United's best players. It appears that we are a nursery club for Real Madrid.
R. Spinks, Bristol,
Let him go Fergiie, cash-in and save a few quid on the salaries bill. It's rare for players to repeat their Premier League success abroad. Besides there's Rooney, Tevez, Nani, Anderson who can only get better without Ronaldo. MU v Real with Ronaldo - now that's a mouthwatering prospect...
cww, Ipswich,
united are bigger than one player. Let him go. Pride comes before a fall. In a year it'll be christiano who?
dan, Warwick, uk
real madrid are no match to man utd now. Still if ronaldo goes to real madrid, man utd are still more likely to win the champions league than real madrid. To me, I see real madrid winning only one trophy (i.e la liga). In short man utd are better than real madrid.
mudas, London, England
Loyalty? What happened to that, But the players of today don't give a fig when they earn the amount of money they get. And I'm sorry to say that foreign players are not as loyal to their clubs and homegrown ones. They are in it for the money only.
Giggsy, Scholes etc are the type of loyal players.
Dave, Louth, England
I dont see what the fuss is all about. The boy wants a move - and Real are going to offer silly money for him - why, let him go! There is no shortage of good players who want to play for United - Becks left and United didnt die, Van Nistelrooy left and United were stronger -sell him and buy Robinho!
Peter, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
I think he is such the big "I am" that he will never listen to anyone or care about anyone. He surely must go now because the fans at M.U. will surely be very anti ,and with him publicly not wanting to stay,it's a hopeless situation.
I wonder if Real is not a dream but a cemetary these days
Graham burrill, keston,
For goodness sake Utd take the money!
Yes he is a great player but Utd are far from a one man team.
£80million would by three world class players. Imagine Utd with a more balanced side with a recognised centre forward like Berbatov!!
Footnote can anyone explain a 4 year contract means in the EPL?
David A, Dubai, UAE
When a team is made up of a majority of bought players with one or star two players, there can be no self delusion of loyalty. What loyalty has the manager shown towards his youth players who he chased, signed and trained for years. It seems to me the clubs are getting a taste of their own medicine
sid, london,
I hope he will live to regret leaving Man U. The way that he was treated after the Rooney sending off was a credit to our fans. We will miss his brilliance as a footballer, but the way he has treated Portugal and Man U in the past few days shows that he only cares for himself. Shame on him.
Anthony Hollis, Frimley Green, England
Forget the hysterics - the boy's NOT a fan but an employee. Yes, he's a spoilt and selfish little brat but that's modern football and contracts... So Real want him that badly ? Let's test how mutual this love affair really is - £100M CASH UP FRONT + Ramos. Your move Real... put up or shut up !
Qadir, London, England
it's easier to tot up goals when you take most of the penalties and free kicks that the attacking pressure of the Man U TEAM provide for him. And let's not forget he fluffed the two big pens last season. Let him go bring in two world class players. egotists usually bring about their own downfall!
Jan, Hertfordshire,
Man U has plenty of players who would love to play for them. Ronaldo has not given a proper reason for wanting to leave.
Ronaldo's getting too big for his boots. You don't just make press announcements like that. Ferguson should punish him by benching him, and let him go.
Larry, San Francisco, USA
Can anyone imagine such a scenario in any other business , if an employee want's to leave a company then he should be allowed to do so .
As for having his head turned , it will come as no surprise that Scolari want's him out of the Premiership , his job will be a whole lot easier.
Nick Dixon, Sutton Coldfield, England.
Let the little greedy immature boy go. Obviously hasn't learnt what a contract means. I, for one, don't want him around Old Trafford any more. If we're lucky some rugged Spanish defender will sideline him for a few months. Hope Man U make Madrid pay - heavily - and then find they can't use him.
Sean Halliday, Fanham, UK
Truly a great player but what on earth did he think he was doing when he signed a contract? His attitude is childish. United should have the courage to leave him on the bench unless they are really so desperate for money. In which sell your shares now!
oscar katz, mortagne, france
'Manchester is Grim' says Dave in Disneyland. Sorry.. I meant to say Derry.
As regards Ronaldo, he needs to ostracised for the next 12 months and then MUFC can flog him off to whoever want him next year. Failing that they should stiff Madrid. Get them to cough up £100 million and then he can go.
A Thomas, Durham,
These comments mirror those made not so long ago, "young, ill advised, selfish", about another potential world beater. that player had his head turned by agents, other teams players and god knows who else. ring any bells? glass houses come to mind
Rob Costain, liverpool, uk
Utd's firm stand is admirable. It is a stand against player power. They should make an example of Ronaldo. That would warn their other players on when other clubs come knocking at their door. Utd must show that they will not to be messed around.
John, malta, Malta
Forget his playing ability Man U have the image rights. I live in Singapore. I saw his image in a Man U shirt in movie poster, an advert in the Cinema, on the TV and a bus shelter today. Presumably all the companys that use those images will want some compensation to restructure everything.
Chris Smith, Singapore, Singapore
Ronaldo is an adult who can choose where he wants to be. I will greatly miss his presence on the field, but it is ultimately his decision. I will follow him his whole career, no matter the team or club he is playing for. Mancester United is my team, but may not be his. Good luck my brother.
Aaron, Ossian, USA
The boy, yes he is still a boy even at 23, wants to go and has no feeling for the club, his colleagues or the fans. Get rid, use the money for top class team players. A proper front playing target man would be nice as a start. David Villa would do nicely or steal Torres from Liverpool.
alan, benalmadena, spain
I don't think United can hold onto him now his relationship with SAF has deteriorated so far. Purely on footballing terms, I think he'd achieve more at United, because they are molding into a great team. But it's up to him ifhe wants to pursue greater cash and fame at Real.
Best wishes Ron.
Sam, Berks,
Let him go & blood some youngsters.Just to keep the fans onside I calculate league prices can be reduced by £35 per seat next season.Puts it all in context really.
Bob Greenaway, Tamarin,
Unfortunately I dont think Ronaldo will realise after his performance at the Euro's what he owes Rooney and Tevez at United making the space for him to look good in. Ronaldo has been fantastic for United but he only thinks of himself and forgets what he owes Ferguson and Quirez.. Let him go I say
Gil Swash, Mainz, Germany
Real Madrid is a legend, the best team in Europe with 9 european champions league, it is normal, majority of players want to go to Real. Ronaldo is real's fans from he was a child and his family too, it is his dream. And I think that he have to go. It's a pity don't reach your dreams.
Laura, Burgos, Spain
The problem with Ronaldo is he is young, ill advised and selfish.
He has 4 years on his contract, whatever happened to honouring contracts ?
There is no morality in the game anymore, what a bad role model to set for all the youngsters out there.
Its a sign of the times.
john ebanks, Georgetown, Grand Cayman
well if he goes he goes, what can i say. After all the support and loyalty he has been shown by Fergueson and the fact that he has only in the past two years become an exceptionally good player shows he has no respect for the team and manager that stood by him.
joanne tooke, bury st edmunds, suffolk
what goes around comes around. Remember how Rooney "had" to leave Everton to improve with a bigger club like Utd. Well now they know how it feels. Karmic returns.
Joe, London,
well if he wants to leave maybe that will be next year when Fergie has benched him all season and all the other players have made him an outcast, he may think he is great but in Real no one is greater than Raul.. so Goodluck to him and goodbye to the trophies as madrid win none compared to man utd.
Sophie, London, England
let him sit in the stands,.....then sell him when he has lost match fitness....
peter, hertford,
Manchester is pretty grim. No matter how much money you earn,
dave, Derry,
If I were 23, rich, raised in a decent climate I think I would choose to live and work in Madrid rather than Manchester. Nothing to do with the respective clubs - more about lifestyle. Better players have left - Utd should take the money and come back stronger.
Paul , Bangor, Wales
Ungrateful weasel. United are far bigger than one over-hyped player & have a fantsatic team for next season without him. They should let him go but make Real pay through the nose. I hope his form in Spain goes the way of Henry & Owen etc.
Karl, Palmerston North,
So....
Scholari advises him to leave Man Utd, at the same time knowing that he'll go to Chelsea. Clearly some integrity there, then. He'll fit in well at Chelsea if he's a shyster, so best to prive it to the new boss now!
Dave, Notts, UK
What about when Rooney went to Man Utd. Did the Man Utd fans not want him because he didnt honour his contract? I thought not.
Andy, liverpool, england
Unfortunately alot of us on this island are too naroow minded too see that playing for madrid is the pinacle for any if not most footballers outside of britain.
you can not all of a sudden disclaim his talent and dignity due too his aspirations!
how hes improved compared to rooney, let him move on.
jess, london, endland
He was poor against Germany which just shows he is not a big game player - someone like Ballack (whom I'm not the biggest fan of!!) made a difference in that game and is worth 2 of Ronaldo. As a Man U fan myself I feel he has let us all down and we should let him leave - 60-70 million is a good deal
Rob, Whitstable, UK
Hargreaves...... that is all I have to say! He wasn't for sale either until the player became unhappy with Bayern.....the Club who made Owen!!!!!!! He also said it was a dream of his to play at Man U!!!!! Sound familiar????? What goes around...comes around....
Frank Verde, Kitimat, Canada
Someone who thinks he is bigger than everyone else has much further to fall. I dont like his attitude, I dont like his smugness and I dont care for his football either.
Richard, Plymouth,
Let him go,with the understanding that he had 4 years left on his contract. Therefore Real should pay Utd.not only a transfer fee but loss of 4 years worth of Ronaldo.£150m should cover it.Then see how Real and Ronaldo have mucked Utd. and Ferguson about and also boring the general public to deth.
john , shrewsbury, uk
Ronaldo,Fantastic player, but one brilliant season doesn't make a legend. If his heart is not at the club he has to go, With the media frenzy over Euro 2008 and is lack to come out and commit his future to Man Utd he has lost respects of his Manager, the Players and the Fans.
Mike, Wales,
Ferg plucked him from nowhere and gave him the support he needed to flourish into a greater offensive talent - now Ronaldo stabs his mentor in the back now he's reached the pinnacle. A sad indictment on Football in general. No heart, no pride - it's ONLY about the money. I'd axe him in a heartbeat.
Slaine, Sunshine Coast, Australia
Ronaldo's move is just creating a hype. There is no doubt that he is a valuable player for Man UTD, however even his move will not effect the team perfomance. UTD has enough talent to continue to be on the top. We may just see another super star in making under the shade of Sir Alex.
Noman, Mumbai, India
Ronaldo says its his choice where he plays. Wrong, as he has a contract that should mean that for the next four years he plays in Manchester. Exept of course, the players have all the power and he will do what he likes.
This is just the latest example of the hideous money game being ruined.
Nigel, Brighton,
Sometimes a player can be gifted with great talent like Maradonna and now Ronaldo but lack the character for real greatness. The greatest players like Pele, Stanley Matthews, Di Stefano and Puskas have been a credit to the game and role models for future players.
David Gwilliam, Leicester, England
Sometimes a player can be gifted with great talent like Maradonna and now Ronaldo but lack the character for real greatness. The greatest players like Pele, Stanley Matthews, Di Stefano and Puskas have been a credit to the game and role models for future players.
David Gwilliam, Leicester, England
To Simon, Lancaster it settles the Best v Ronaldo debate - Best also let ManU down after he won the European Cup. Football went west as he spent his time drinking and chasing women. After that ManU went downhill for five years hanging on to players who were no longer of use. Get rid of Ronaldo now!
David, Guildford, UK
Sell him for no less than 100 million and say good riddance. Let him roll around the pitch pretending he's hurt in spain where he wont even win the spanish league, let alone the Champions league.
Michael, Bracknell, UK
No wonder Scolari is urging him to move to Real Madrid... he wouldn't want Ronaldo as an opposition in the Premiership! Ronaldo will make more of a name for himself staying at one club and making history
Laura D, Scarborough, England
Ronaldo has made HUGE progress at Man Utd, but has choked on the big stage. There comes a time for everyone to move on BUT Man Utd should hold out for the £80 million being talked about. 4 years left at Man Utd...If Ronaldo really wants that move HE will put pressure on REAL to pay the price.

If he wants to go take the money ,get over it and move on there are 11 players in each team
Garry Webster, Norwich,
Let him go - presumably there are Spanish equivalents of Derby, Bolton, Reading, etc, that he can tear apart, and also equivalents of Arsenal and Chelsea who will make him look ordinary.
This should enable people to continue calling him the best player in the world.
Shammer, Singapore,
In about three weeks, when nothing happens,Ronaldo will return to the training ground declaring that the press missquoted him. It happened after the Rooney affair in Germany.
United, tell the top clubs that they will listen to offers about 65 mill. Get a bidding war going. Chelsea will help out !
Dave Evans, Zuerich, Switzerlandland
interesting that scholari 'advised' ronaldo to realise his dream, was this before or after scholari signed for chelsea? is this the best move for ronaldo? i doubt it. i think he needs to stay one or two years to repay the fans loyalty for standing by him after the rooney incident. we'll all miss
nathan, norwich,
I just think we may hardly ever see him again if he follows his dream to go to Madrid and that would be a great loss. He has brought great charisma to football.

As a ManUtd fan, i dont think we need Ronaldo to win a treble next year. I do beleive that Man Utd should not seel him to Real Madrid(sell him to Barca). I think Sir Ferguson should either bench Ronaldo for a season and show him who the boss is(beleive me Ferguson can, and has done that in the past
SammyV, Stretford, UK
methinks the guy should just go if he wants to. after all, he is a worker like the rest of the squad. he should however, stop thinking with his boiling young blood and use his head instead.
So much for the guy hailed as the next legend at Man Utd.
John, Nairobi, Kenya
People are criticizing Ronaldo's loyalty. Oh Come on! Why, two simple points:
1. Never has a club showed its loyalty to players, when they are surplus to requirement, they get offload. That also applies with United
2. What goes around, comes around as United has been poaching players at smaller club
Bobanhugh, Manchester, UK
Let him go. Have we not been here before with an overpaid spoilt individual, Beckham. Maybe he will set a new transfer record but I am sure that a man of Fergie's calibre can make a new star. The lad is gifted but he does not make a team.
David, Glasgow, Scotland
Players these days are really like mercenaries, and Christiano should be careful what he wishes for ? He got kicked in the Premiership, what does he think waits for him in Spain!!
United will go on without him eg. Becham,Stam,Keane,Cole..
Maybe sign Beckford from Leeds he's hot see youtube
diddi, cheshire, england
He is a bottler, plain and simply. Where was he in the game against Germany when it really counted? Where was he in all the big Champions League and Premiership games?
United should snap there hands off at £80 million.
Sam, Durham, UK
One man doesn't make a team - it's true... BUT...! There's little doubt, as any genuine football student (including Fergie) knows, Man United without Christiano Ronaldo woudn't be half the side they are. If Ronaldo had been left on the bench last season they would have struggled to make the top six.
John Jay, Walton on Thames, UK
Let him go. I think he is wrong. Sir Alex made him what he his. Yet again he seems to play below par in a massive game.
dex, mansfield, ngland
he should go. he wants it real bad so man utd should just let him go. its his dream and it'll be upsetting if a great club like man utd crush his dream..LET HIM GO!!
angelina, melbourne, australia
just another example of selfish, unloyal, ungrateful brats that are professional footballers. He's tainted his achievements lasts year with his unbelievable attitude.
without fergie he will suffer the most. He could have left a hero if he'd explained his desire to leave instead of acting like a kid
James D Irwin, Eastbourne,
It may be a dream for Ronaldo to move to Madrid but it's hardly footballing progress. He lacks ambition and Spain lacks the genuine intensity of challenge for a forward player only really provided in Italy. That would be the real test showing how good Ronaldo truly is.
Gerry, clydebank,
He'd be better off at a team who play attractive and challenging football than just a forceful one. Cant wait to see him at Madrid, I for one will be investing in a real kit with Ronaldo on the back.
Dan, Dorch Vegas,
i think man u r holding on tight because they kno that letting him go would give real a boost in the CL, something saf wants very badly again before he retires, n he knows ronaldo is 23 n barely at his prime, i see him staying for a year maybe
el-shadi, weston,
Ronaldo has been a great player for Manchester United and if he wishes to move to Real Madrid for whatever reason, Ferguson should accpet his decision.
A great loss but he has worked hard and scored some wonderful goals and brought Man.United into the fore with his football skill.
izzy, wirral, england
for man utd read arsenal we have had it for years with veira, overmars, anelka, henry, i say good on you man utd and fergie, someone has to make a stand somewhere otherwise why sign contracts! no one player is greater than the club especially man utd, +arsenal. fergie buy a replacement +dont sell
paul, potters bar, uk
The Premier League is clearly the best league in the world at the moment and for the forseeable future. REAL have a great history, and so do UNITED - UNITED are now top dogs, REAL are at best 'average' also rans. REAL need Ronaldo much more than UNITED do, so sell him, but for no less than £100m.
Richard, London, England
But I Love Ronaldo ='[
Jade, huntingdon, England
Ronoldo should not leave man u..........caz real madrid alrady took beckham, van nistelrooy from man u
thanuj kumar, chennai, india
Well at least this settles the Best vs Ronaldo debate...
Simon, Lancaster,
He has said it clearly that the train only passes once and one needs to take advantage of that. He is a great player and he has really helped man utd. I would urge united to release him so that he can realise his dreams.
OGANGA, Nairobi City, Kenya
Real without doubt are "the" best team in the world - Every player in the world "dreams" of one day playing for Madrid.
Ronaldo is just another player who dreams! Man U must just look at cashing in on him and make more money - thts perfect business sense!
Murari, Mumbai, India
Here is a player who has not yet had the guts to ask for a transfer, nor the guts to talk to his manager. Anyone wishing to leave a job of any kind needs to be able to make a clear statement and until he does that, he isn't about to leave United. I would wager that he stays for one more season.
Ian Rothera, Hong Kong, China
I feel the club is bigger then the player. Granted everyone has their dream and Ronaldo's dream has always been to play for Madrid, however the manner in which he has gone about angling for his move has been despicable. Without MAN UTD he would have been talented but wasteful, like Robinho.
Moe, London, UK
i think RONALDO should go to real madrid.man utd has always pulled through without players like him[beckham etc.] so i dont see what the fuss is all about...........
hakim, nairobi, kenya
Not sure what the big deal is! Here is a player who doesnt want to play for your team anymore. What would you gain by forcing him to play?! United, settle this once and for all, and move on.....
Modi, San Francisco,
In Ferguson's 30+ years of management, how many players have left him to go on to better things?
Ronaldo risks everything going wrong for the sake of an extra few grand he ill needs.
Silly, silly boy.
Ian Thomson, Houston, TX, USA
It is time to let Ronaldo go. There is £60-65mill to be had here and leaving him on the bench is wasting 120K a week. It will be la liga's problem when the Premier League is rid of Ronaldo. Man United will be lucky to face madrid only once in the champions league so I don't know what all the fuss is
phil, HK, China
Seriously, He is the best player in the world and could be EVER grace the football field.. I say to FERGUSON let him ROT in the BENCH!! , players cannot use this method to move clubs and I hate REAL MADRID for always poaching our TOP PLAYERS. SELL HIM TO BARCELONA!
Gavin, ampang, malaysia
Liverpool are currently trying to offload Xavi Alonso who has 4 years remaining on a 5 year contract he signed last year. If clubs can do it to players why not the other way around.
His heart has gone, let him go.
Paul , Chiang Mai , Thailand
SAF picks his battles: he fights all of them, without regard for the war's outcome.
Defiant players are always subject to fans' chanting of SAF's mantra: 'No player is bigger than the club'.
Try a new one: SAF is not the club. SAF is not the club. SAF is not the club. SAF is not the club.
Daniel Czarniak, Atlanta, US
Ronaldo, Ronaldo, Ronaldo...Greed and fame has got to his head. He should play out the remainder of his contract with UNited, and then decide on the next course of action.
Robert Searle, Sevenoaks, United Kingdom
Its obvious some of you Man utd fans are delusional, when a player wants to leave let him leave keeping him is pointless, bad for the dressing room, bad for moral all round a bad choice. If he stays am certain they will struggle.
Kitson, London,
For God's sakes United fans get over it. Carrick had three years left on his contract but Spurs fans understood the situation and we got a good deal. Football takes heart, if its not there, take the £100m (transfer fee + unpaid wages) and move on.
Raj Chande, London, United Kingdom
There's no point keeping unhappy players. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink. If Utd don't sell, they'll have a guy who is uncommitted and whose value will depreciate.
mark, newcastle, england
True he is contracted on120,000UKP per week, but if he does not want to play that is a lot of money for a plc to burn over 4 years.
Upshot is he wants to leave he will leave. Sorry ManUre fans.
For the money he commands ManUre should be able to buy 2 -3 good players that want to play for the team.
gary , Stuttgart, Germany
He's one year into a 4-yr contract. My question is, what's the point of signing a contract if you're not going to honour it?
Sit the stroppy,pig-headed kiddie on the bench and let him think about that!
Clive Britcher, Caracas, Venezuela
let him rot on the bench, players need to honor their contracts... if he didn't want to stay at united then he shouldn't have put pen to paper to begin with.
and i agree with the comment about them winning la liga and NOTHING else, i dunno, when you're making 120,000 a week, what's another 80,000?
chris, new glasgow ns, canada
I once heard a Manchester United Assistant say that Christiano Ronaldo could be to soccer what, Micheal Jordan is to basketball. The difference is Jordan is a leader. Ronaldo is being a follower. He has a chance to make United the best team in soccer history, better than Real Madrid, if he stays at united for the rest of his career. Leaders make history, they don't join it. That's what makes them a legend.
Arthur Gallegos, Los Angeles, USA
Ronaldo needs to think about what he's doing. He's still only 23 and I just don't think its the right time for him to move. Sir Alex is said to retire in three years. Why not wait until then? ANd your right, no means no from Fergie.
Steven, Stockwell,
Alex Fergusson must understand that given a choice of the Bernabau or Old Trafford, the Bernabau wins every time. Madridites pay for the best and are like the Mounties. They always get their man. Unless the irrascible Scotsman lightens up or Manchester has a climate change, it will always be so.
Herman Govitz, Hong Kong,
United should sell him but put him up for auction, let Barca,Inter and Milan bid for Him!
Remember Heinze and Liverpool?
Andrew, Edinburgh, Scotland
Let him go, Sir Alex will replace him. Easily. Rremember no one is bigger than the club.
Derek, Carluke, Scotland
Christiano,go to the best league in the world, you deserve it,nothing left to prove at man utd.Let man utd get a taste of their own medicine.cue saha.
maxwewll simel, swindon, uk
It's player's lives and careers, if they want to leave, then there is not much the club can do. Clubs don't have to honour contracts and neither do players. That is how it is.
Man U done the right thing in reporting Real, but now it's time to let Ronaldo go.
Glen, London,
All quite amusing really.
What goes around comes around - Man U do this to players enough of the time (take Rooney for example) so perhaps its a taste of their own medicine.
Barry Jeffrey, Luton, England
Sell the fool.
He will win La Liga with Real and nothing else as they do not have a team or a manager who can compete with the best in Europe.
With the money from Real Fergie can buy ten Ronaldo's and have plenty of change.
Scolari showing early what we can expect from him in his year in charge.
Mark Watson, Barcelona, Spain
Oliver Kay, just listen and read this buddy. Sir Alex is in sole charge of MUFC. If he says Ronaldo is going then he's gone, hopefully double for the price THEY paid for zizou. On the other hand if Sir Alex says no then at no point no becomes yes. Ronaldo will go when he is told to, not when he says
azad ghani, wolverhampton,
David Gill is off until the 30th of June.........But the Madrid need to understand one simple statement:
1. Ronaldo is not for sale!
Ronaldo needs to understand that he has a 4 year contract worth 120k p/w and I would be happy to see him stay until the end and leave on a free at the end.
Rammie Vive, Esher, UK
