Cristiano Ronaldo has given the strongest indication yet of his wish to leave Manchester United this summer.
In a candid interview, the Portugal winger admits it would be "a dream and a step forward" to join Real Madrid, reiterating that he will make an announcement on his future in the coming days.
Ronaldo overshadowed Germany’s dramatic European Championship quarter-final victory over Portugal last night by confirming that he wants to join Real. And although United have once again this morning said that the player is not for sale, the player himself clearly has other ideas.
"It is a dream [to play for Real Madrid], a step forward, you can call it what you want," Ronaldo said. "For me it is a great opportunity, and as [Luiz Felipe Scolari, the Portugal coach] says, that train passes by only once, and we have to take advantage of it.
"That is why he took advantage of his change, that opportunity, and other people have to take advantage of opportunities, too."
Ronaldo yesterday called upon United to sell him to Real, who are expected to table a £60 million offer in the next few days. Any approach will be fiercely resisted at Old Trafford, where Sir Alex Ferguson is standing by his determination to let the player sit in the stands rather than sell him to a leading European rival. However, Ronaldo appears to have set his heart on reaching an agreement with the Spanish giants.
"Let's see in a couple of days," Ronaldo said. "The tournament is over [for Portugal] and I am going to reach an agreement. You will soon know what I want. You do know what I want and that is why I don’t want to say anything else. Lets wait. I want to give more details, that is why I cannot say much more.
"I am going to give my opinion in two days. I am going to say what I want, but things don’t depend only on me, that is why we have to wait."
When asked if he would speak to Ferguson directly, Ronaldo said: "I don’t know what I have to say to him. I have to say what I want and what I think. It is my opinion, that is why I don’t mind if people get upset. It is my decision. It is what I want."
Ronaldo added that he had not spoken to the United manager during the tournament, saying: "I was in a very important competition and we had nothing to say to each other."
The PFA Player of the Year also indicated that he took the decision to leave Old Trafford before the Champions League final victory over Chelsea, adding: "We were competing and I didn’t want to say anything because it is a very important decision.
"I didn’t want to say anything here because I wanted to be focused on Portugal. But now it is finished and I am going to say. It is a personal thing. It is something I want, something I dream of."
The former Sporting Lisbon player admitted he was aware that leaving Old Trafford may not be straightforward. "It is always difficult," he said. "It is not only one person deciding, it is many people, but it can be a very good thing for everybody.
When asked if his dream of playing for Madrid would come true, Ronaldo added: "I really hope so, lets see."

MU is the greatest club in the world and if cristiano ronaldo leaves, it will never be a step foward,
it will only be for the money.
he had everything in MU .
simon you are right mister scolary was already working for chelsea during euro 2008.
PAULO, MADEIRA, PORTUGAL
Cristano Ronaldo is a sly little ___ who doesnt understand how much Manchester has helped him grow and protect him. In my mind Real Madrid is about three steps down from manchester united. I really hope the same thing happens to him as Beckham and doesnt get supstantial amounts of playing time.

His dream move may just turn into a nightmare, Madrid are far from being a force in European football, indeed they have failed to get past the quarter finals for the past 5 years. They will need more than the boy wonder.
The fee, Madrid paid £45m for the 29 year old Zidane £90m should do
Chris Toyne, Medomsley, Co Durham
CR plays so well with MU. I wonder if he's considered that? I doubt he'll get the same alliances.I think he'll feel the pressure after costing so much $$. And as much talent he has, he's not physically or mentally strong as most. Let's see how he handles adversity. I don't think he'll do very well.

It doesn't matter one jot whether Ronaldo wants to move or not if Manchester United don't want to sell, he's going nowhere, apart from maybe the stands.
Stephen, St. Ives, England
Let him go if he really wants it.
I don't think he will improve tremendously at Real Madrid.
Just see the likes of Beckham and Michale Owen who both are among the best players at EPL but faltered once when they joined Real Madrid.
Let time decide.
But I bet, he will regret his decision one day!
Faiezah, Bedok, Singapore
Gary, Dundee, you are right of course but with the money Real will have to spend plus a possibility of Schneider or Robinho (less than convincing) as part of the deal, Utd will not exactly be found wanting when the season starts.
Stephen Manick, Trinidad,
Ronaldo will leave, remember Heinze, Van Nistelroy and Becks. It looks like players are not happy in ManU. As Rennie said "99 percent of all professional footballers would choose Real Madrid over Manchester United".
Felix, Geneva,
We are nobody tell Ronaldo what he can do or not do! It is a dream for him to play for Real Madrid. We need to stop being so selfish because at the end of the day it is his dream and choice.
Jesus , Everson, United States
I'm with Scott, Put a price on him and if Real are stupid enough to pay then say goodbye and lets get one with it...enough of this already.
Jo, Toront, Canada
This is a really sad moment, we are known that his dream joint with Real, so let him go cause that's better way both MU and CR7. And we believe that new star will be raise in the theater of dreams.
Thanks CR7 but you will be never found the supporter like MU's fan at the around of the world.
heriyanto, bambang, Jakarta, Indonesia
C Ronaldo, I'm Portuguese and if you can read this comment, think twice!
Please stay in M United, it is better for you in this moment.
Spain or other's can wait for you.
Regards
Jose Luiz, Cascais, Portugal
Without Ronaldo United wouldn't have won the league - simple as that. And if Ferguson is really opposed to letting him go, either for his own sake or to prevent Real from succeeding in tapping him up, the rumours that AF will quit if he's sold are quite credible.
Joe S. Walker, Liverpool,
i am not sure at all whether Realmadrid should sign Ronaldo, but ManU fans must understand Ronaldo's dream of going to a bigger team. Man U is like Real B: you guys train the players that Realmadrid will sign when they become superstars (Beckam, Van Nistelrooy, Heinze, C. Ronaldo...).
Bertrand Goldratt, Reading, UK
United should take the money (£60-70 million?) and use it to buy Berbatov, Ribery and Micah Richards.
Good business for us Reds!
Steve Collins, Edinburgh, Scotland
Pablo, you forgot to add the BIGGEST pockets!
Stephen Manick, Trinidad,
If they refuse to let him go they will be keeping a disgruntled superstar who will decrease moral and eat up unecessay salary space. Or trade him, take the $50-$70 mil they will get and invest it in the FUTURE of the club. Perhaps a rising stars like Ricardo Quaresma, Joao Moutinho or Karim Benzema.
Norm Williams, Los Angeles, CA, USA
Good! Please leave the english premier league!!!!
Erin , Portland,Or, USA
As a Real Madrid supporter I´ll be very happy if Ronalfo finally comes to my team. Let be serious, ManU is one of the biggest clubs in the world, but Real Madrid: FIFA best team of XX century, 30 ligas, 9 champions league... Real Madrid isn´t one of the biggest clubs, simply is THE BIGGEST.
pablo sáez, granada, spain
Sell him! As a Man U fan I would rather see him at a Spanish Club where his level of football will degrade considerably and then Man U can buy 4 players of his quality without us having to look at his sulky face all the time. The Prem is way ahead of La Liga at the mo in terms of quality.
Mark Watson, Barcelona, Spain
As a United fan I don't know why a top level player like Ronaldo would want to leave a team that has been winning silverware at the highest levels. If Sir Alex isn't harrassing him then I think Ronaldo is a fool for wanting the trade. Real should also be fined heavily for their continuing mischief
Paul Smith, Leominster, Ma, USA
This is a real slap in the face for Fergie & I suppose there is a touch of irony after his past antics in doing the same thing.
However real soccer fans know that these overseas mercenaries will never have any loyalty.
Time for Man U to turn to the legendary youth system & give them a chance.
Bob Greenaway, Tamarin,
more like Robinho,Robben, Ramos plus 60million. Then get Frank Ribery. Take it or leave the lad alone.
Scott, Halifax,
99 percent of all professional footballers would choose Real Madrid over Manchester United. It's not that there's anything wrong with Manchester that climate change, elocution lessons or a Scotts free zone might improve, it's just that if you climb mountains, you've ultimately got to try Everest.
Rennie Spitzer, Hong Kong,
Ronaldo had a career season and will not reach the 42 goal level again. But Man U should push Madrid to the limit especially legally. Squeeze every bit of money they can (I think starting at 150mn sterling is a good point.
Alfred, Moscow,
Manchester or Madrid. ?
Difficult ,that one.
ronnie, Bucks, UK
Man U should grab the money. He couldn't even be on the winning side against Germany and we all know that he couldn't even kick a penalty in the Champions League final after trying to cheat and be clever, which we all anticipated.
All these "Ronald...." guys start off great and then fizzle out.
james allen, manchester, ENGLAND
I think he will go. Scolari is clever to nudge Ronaldo off ManU as once he takes over Chelsea, he will have better chances of beating ManU.
Ashwin, Bristol,
Let's go for Hleb now. Ronaldo has shown he's not a true red. We want someone who'll work for the team, with a good attitude, and track back in the mould of Pires. Hleb is the nearest on the market right now. Admittedly a step down from the flair of Arsenal but hopefull we could land him...
Mr Mountain, Manchester, UK
Ronaldo leaving would be a huge blow to Manchester United. Even though some people say they will cope without him, how can you say that there will be no difference in the team without a player of his quality. He scored 42 goals for goodness sake.
Garry Griffin, Dundee,
Ramos, robinho, and 30 million. take it or leave it.
anton wilson, atlanta, usa
How hilarious! Scolari has had a couple of weeks at the Euros to try to persuade Ronaldo to leave Man U just before he himself takes over at Chelsea. Now why would he want to do that?
Simon, Beijing, China
