Andrea Dossena replaces John Arne Riise at Liverpool

Liverpool have completed the signing of Andrea Dossena, the Italian left-back, from Udinese. He follows the transfer of Philipp Degen, the Swiss right-back, earlier in the day as Rafael Benitez moved to strengthen his defensive options. Both players have signed four-year deals.

Dossena, 26, replaces John Arne Riise who left for Roma earlier this summer and joins for an undisclosed fee thought to be around £7 million. He has been capped once by Italy, in a friendly last year.

Degen joins on a free transfer from Borussia Dortmund.

Tom-Kent, You cannot buy everyone pal, Torres is a prime example of that. Only time will tell whether these two are good enough, but where were Chelsea when Agger was on the market, or in fact Man Utd's Vidic.

If these two full backs were that good, why weren't Man Utd, Real Madrid, Barca and Chelsea in for them? Prime example why Liverpool wont win the league again

As to whether Dossena is an improvement on Riise as Degen, is yet to be seen. We will adopt a wait and see attitude. We still have not forgotten "Speedy Gonzales", Voronin, Josemi, Morientes and loads of other players
