A 13-year-old girl wearing a vest packed with explosives turned herself in to Iraqi police north of Baghdad yesterday because she did not want to become a suicide bomber, the US military said.
Iraqi forces in the restive city of Baquba removed the bomb from the girl, who then led them to a second vest, also loaded with explosives.
Lieutenant Commander David Russell, a US military spokesman, said: "Reports are that she approached the IPs (Iraqi police) saying she had the vest on and didn't want to go through with it. If she was forced to put on the vest or if she did it voluntarily, that is still being reviewed."
Female suicide bombers have become a weapon of choice for al-Qaeda in Iraq because women are less likely to be searched at checkpoints and also often wear long, black, Islamic robes that conceal explosives.
It is rare for such a young female, however, to be involved in an attack. The girl is now in police custody while the incident is investigated.
Al-Qaeda’s ability to conduct attacks in Iraq has suffered a blow following a crackdown by US and Iraqi forces over the past 18 months as well as a decision by many Sunni insurgents to turn against the extremist group.
The US military said yesterday that al-Qaeda conducted almost 300 bombings in 2007 in which more than 1,500 civilians were killed. The number of attacks in the first half of this year plunged to 28, in which 125 civilians were killed.
Despite the drop in attacks, the threat is ever-present.
At least 25 people were killed and 38 wounded yesterday when a male suicide bomber targeted a feast on the western outskirts of Baghdad to celebrate the release of a man from US detention. He was among the dead.

What kind of people would ask a 13 year old to blow herself up?
When you've answered that question, you've caught the gist of Muslim fundamentalism.

In another newspaper it is said that the female relatives of the girl's husband strapped the explosives on her. She did not want to die and presented herself to the police.
What a story. A 13-year-old probably obliged to marry, and the in-laws decide that she must kill and die. What can one say...

"Islam prohibits killing innocent people and animals."
What happens when the innocent people refuse the offer of Islam and refuse to surrender to the will of allah? What are to be done with these infidels? If i am to listen to 21st century imams these infidels are to be delt with as lesser beings.

This is another form of honour killing. Hope she won't be sent back home.

David Dennis USA, just to remind you there is no wahabbism in Islam no sect known as wahabbi. I guess you are being brain washed by the media. To come to the point its unfortunate someone as young as the girl could be exploited in this way. Islam prohibits killing innocent people and animals.

No, Blaine, we do not lack freedom of the press. We lack seriousness of the press. Unless the girl had blown up, the missing child of a total stranger, or a celebrity's new tattoo would dominate the headlines. It is mindless trivia or maudlin sentiment most Americans crave, not valid news.

What we lack here in the states is freedom of the press. A story like this doesn't make it across the pond. Had she detonated the device or been raped by the police, now then it would be on the broadcast every hour.

Finally, a break in the cycle of female suicide bombers! YEAH!

We need to keep in the front of our minds and never let go the fact that Wahabbism in Arabia has the House of Saud ,under their thumb, since the early '30's when America began assisting the oil rich area to drill and sell on the open-market.
Their's was an OK to drill and to kill infidels.
