Terror suspect out on bail seven years after arrest

Long Lartin An alleged al-Qaeda operative said to have “direct links” with Osama bin Laden was released on bail from a top-security jail.

The Algerian man, identified only as U, left Long Lartin prison in Worcestershire after spending more than seven years in jail fighting extradition and deportation.

His release came two weeks after the Special Immigration Appeals Commission (SIAC) granted bail to the radical preacher Abu Qatada. A third terror suspect, who was cleared of conspiracy to murder in the “ricin plot” trial in 2005, is negotiating for his release on bail.

Yesterday's release of U followed his challenge in the Court of Appeal, which overturned SIAC's ruling that he could be deported to Algeria.

U, aged 45, has been electronically tagged and is subject to strict bail conditions, including visitor and communication restrictions. He is alleged to be a terrorist leader who recruited, trained and facilitated operations. He had been in custody since February 2001, when he was stopped at Heathrow trying to board a flight to Saudi Arabia.
