Q How can I obtain a manual for my faulty Epson printer? DS, from Rugby
A Most technology manufacturers no longer supply a printed manual. You are usually provided with a digital PDF manual on the CD that came with the printer. If not, you can usually download this from Epson’s support website (tinyurl.com/4zst46) or find an answer to your problem by searching the site’s knowledge base.
If you can’t find your printer’s details, search for one with a similar model number as they are often renamed for marketing reasons in different regions. SafeManuals (safemanuals.com) offers more than a million consumer technology manuals from which you can download one for free.
Q How can I remove the saved history of search terms from my web browser?PB, from Teesside
A This list is being stored by your web-browser software. To clear it from Internet Explorer (IE) go to “Tools - Internet Options” and then click on “Clear History” (or “Delete Browsing History” if you are using IE version 7). This removes the record of items that you have entered in the search box and the websites you entered on the address bar. You can keep this feature in check by modifying the “Days to keep pages in history” option.
Q I spend the winter months in Florida. How can I best watch UK-based TV on my laptop? DS, via e-mail
A There are several online television services but most offer nonUK stations or web-specific content rather than shows broadcast in Britain. Have a look at Inner-Live (www.inner-live.com ) for starters.
There are also swish expat TV services that enable you to watch Freeview channels, or even Sky, as they are broadcast, using a computer that can be located anywhere so long as it has a broadband connection. These employ the popular Slingbox technology to relay TV shows over the internet - two examples are www.uktv2c.com and www.thetelly.net .
They are expensive because you are, in effect, buying a UK-based Slingbox then connecting to it via your laptop’s web browser. You will also need a UK television licence.
