Tory MEPs will be told to demonstrate that their finances are in order by David Cameron’s City enforcer today as a survey showed that two thirds employed their wives at widely varying rates of pay.
Hugh Thomas, a former head of compliance at Deutsche Bank, will lecture the 28 Conservative MEPs on the need for consistency and transparency after a week of allegations over expenses which claimed the jobs of their Brussels leader and Chief Whip.
The Times understands that 18 of the MEPs employ their wives as secretaries or office assistants on salaries between £10,000 and £60,000.
The lowest rate is paid by Martin Callanan, MEP for the North East, whose wife works as an administrative assistant and researcher, while the upper band of £50,000 to £60,000 is earned by Carolyn, wife of the North West MEP David Sumberg. She is listed as a full-time secretary and assistant.
Mr Thomas will find that the Conservative MEPs are angry that some of the disclosures about their use of expenses have been made possible because Mr Cameron ordered the publication of more information than either Labour or the Liberal Democrats require of their MEPs.

A "small" factor to consider is that the remuneration received for these non-jobs,is tax free and will include 42 days paid leave, tax and duty free purchases, subsidised fuel, subsidised accommodation, annual flights home etc. etc. ad nauseum.

it would be more correct to say that these spouses are being 'paid' £60 000 rather than 'earning' £60 000.

A month prior to the next election all MPs and MePs should publish a list of their expenses for the last 5 years in their local newspapers. The voters can then decide if they are fit candidates.

Obviously, they can't justify these rates of pay for spouses. But they were 'pushing the envelope' of examples of others around them. They are angry that the disclosures are now possible because their parliamentary colleagues have been caught 'dipping'; it is quite understandable. Not justifiable!

I worked in the European parliament for two years. I have never seen Sumberg's wife and only saw him a couple of times. It was well known that he didn't have an office in Brussels.

The examples of utter arrogant exploitation of public funds by the tory party seems to know no limits.........................Why arent these people being prosecuted for fraud?

Admin assistant 60,000 pounds. How on earth can the European Parliament justify this gravy train?
