Sir, The report (Oct 9) that new high-tech average-speed detection cameras are likely to be deployed initially on long rural A roads presents an opportunity to simplify current speed limits greatly.
A by no means unique example is a six-mile stretch of A road on the Isle of Anglesey that has speed limits of 30, 40, 60, 40, 30, 50, 60 and 30mph occurring quite randomly and illogically — only two of the 30mph stretches are through villages and most minor roads off the A road have 60mph limits. The multifarious speed-limit signs are often hidden by hedges.
The wider use of average speed cameras would provide an opportunity to simplify the present system of speed limits greatly by introducing a blanket speed limit of 50mph on all rural two or three-lane roads with a limit perhaps as low as 20mph through villages.
The present system of widely varying speed limits is totally illogical given that “crashes occur frequently but in many different places”.

The question is not what speed below the limit is safe, but whether you can risk driving at the speed limit if that makes you a dangerous hazard to all the much faster traffic passing you. Incidentally, continually looking around for the next speed limit sign can be another hazard.
Tom Welsh, Basingstoke,
Peter - A speed limit is not a judgement of what is safe. It is a ruling about what is legal. The driver must decide what speed is safe, which may be well below the speed limit.
Norman Paterson, Anstruther, UK
A speed limit is a pretty arbitrary judgement of what is safe, so by all means simplify them.
