Sir, The Government has finally lost all credibility in the matter of climate change with the decision to allow the expansion of Stansted Airport (report, Oct 10). In the same week in which it acknowledged that more severe cuts in carbon emissions are required, and recognition has been made that aviation should be included in UK targets, Geoff Hoon has agreed a course of action that will contribute to an increase in carbon dioxide output.

On the one hand the public is being exhorted to use low-energy light bulbs and insulate homes while on the other we are being told that it is OK to continue to take unnecessary holiday flights. As long as the Government continues to give out these mixed messages the public is not going to take the need for reducing carbon emissions seriously.

It is time for the Government to heed the warnings of the scientists and adopt an honest approach to this crisis. Unless urgent action is taken now the question of economic security and pleasing the voters will be academic.
