The Hills, MTV’s hottest show, is back with a vengeance. Across the English-speaking world, hoards of obsessed fans are tuning in to see what becomes of Lauren, Heidi and the rest of the gang in season four. Back in April, Web Watcher brought to your attention Over the Hills, a spoof that re-enacts the reality show about beautiful young things living it up in Los Angeles word for word with elderly actors.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, a programme that focuses exclusively on fickle and frivolous queen bees with nothing better to do than fall out with each other seems to have spawned rather a lot of parody.
This one from MAD TV, the Emmy award-winning comedy sketch show, looks at the original Los Angeles crew back in season one. “Lauren” introduces us to her blonde and bouffanted friend Heidi who is “a really nice person” (remember, this is season one) even though she spends all her time ignoring her friends, fighting with her boyfriend (not much has changed there then) and struggling with complicated issues such as sitting down at her desk.
The Hills: According to Me, which features re-edits of the real programme with a man in drag portraying all the girls, is a bit of a cheap shot, despite the fact that it is actually being aired on MTV itself in the near future. Make up your own mind here.
As usual James Franco and co get it just right on Funny or Die with a re-enactment of the show that, like Over the Hills, repeats exact dialogue, in this case that of a three-minute conversation between Audrina and her boyfriend Justin Bobby. “Am I, like, that easy to figure out?” Audrina whines from behind her hair. Well, yes, the vacant stares and pregnant pauses so aptly highlighted by Franco and Mila Kunis do shed some light on it.
