Stripes (1981)
Five US, 9pm
Bill Murray made one of his earliest big-screen appearances in Ivan Reitman's anarchic military comedy. Murray and his fellow Ghostbuster and future Groundhog Day director Harold Ramis play deadbeat losers who enrol in the US Army almost by accident, but end up going to war to rescue their platoon. The frenetic jokes in Stripes are fairly hit-and-miss, but Murray brings class and depth even to juvenile slapstick. John Candy, Warren Oates and Sean Young co-star. (101min)
I'll Sleep When I'm Dead (2003)
ITV4, 11pm
Three decades after he directed the all-time British underworld classic Get Carter, Mike Hodges revisited the themes of London gangland and fraternal revenge in this moody crime thriller. Clive Owen stars as a reformed tough guy who declares war on Malcolm McDowell's sadistic Soho godfather for the rape and murder of his younger brother, played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers. A little too stylistically muted for such a lurid plot, I'll Sleep When I'm Dead is a decent effort but lacks the punch of previous Hodges films. (103min)
The Sea Inside (2004)
Channel 4, 1.10am
The Spanish actor Javier Bardem, who recently won an Oscar for his scary-haired performance in the Coen brothers' No Country for Old Men, pulls off another dazzling transformation in this moving and poetic true story. An almost unrecognisable Bardem plays Ramón Sampedro, a bedridden quadriplegic who became a national folk hero in Spain by challenging the Government over his legal right to end his own life. It is a testament to the skill of both Bardem and the director Alejandro Amenábar that The Sea Inside manages to remain an affirmative celebration of life and love in the face of tragedy. In Spanish with English subtitles. (125min)
