Between Ourselves
Radio 4, 9am
Olivia O'Leary, quite possibly the best interviewer on radio, begins a new three-part series of her confessional tripartite conversation programme with Tony Little, the Head Master of Eton, and Michael Wilkins, the Executive Principal of Outwood Grange, a comprehensive school near Leeds. The differences between their respective pupil intake are obvious - it's unlikely that any of Wilkins' pupils will have a good chance of becoming the next prime minister - but it's the things they have in common that make the two men, supposedly at either end of the educational spectrum, brothers under the skin. Yes, Little can put financial considerations aside as he seeks the best and the brightest for his intake, but is that any easier to Wilkins' task of uncovering diamonds in the rough?
The Rory Gallagher Story
Radio 2, 10.30pm
Anyone who loves the sound of the blues-rock guitar sumptuously played and who hasn't heard Gary Moore's beautifully compiled tribute to an oft-forgotten virtuoso before is urgently advised to hear it this repeat. Rory Gallagher, the archetypal low-profile blue-collar guitarist, with his lumberjack shirt, blue jeans and effortfully battered Fender Strat (the frets were, it was whispered, eaten away by the sweat from those mile-a-minute fingers), drank himself to death at the age of 47, in 1995. But before he went he brought the devil-damned spirit of Robert Johnson up to date with some of the most vivid electric guitar playing of the post-Hendrix era. Those unexposed to his genius should listen to this, and then buy his first solo album. Life-changing stuff.
