As the stock market comes crashing down and the banks start to borrow money from us rather than the other way round, do you ever find yourself wishing for a slow news day? Well, at tinyurl.com/3he3hf I think I may have found what you are looking for. Here is a compilation of awkward silences culled from many years of the BBC News channel, with scores of presenters shuffling papers awkwardly, over the giant white headline NO NEWS.
The host of this video, www.dailymotion.com is one of those video sites that encourages creativity from its viewers, just as much as videos of fluffy kittens. It hosts its own short film competition (and when I say short, I mean short), and the winner at tinyurl.com/3r23dl is a well-made sketch of a driving test going horribly wrong. There's also a troublingly good animated series based on the video game Grand Theft Auto and starring Spider-Man. Type GTA Spiderman into the search box to see all ten episodes.
If you're after something rather more educational from the internet, I whole-heartedly recommend the determinedly quirky www.rocketboom.com. Each day one of this low-budget web channel's charming presenters attempts to unravel one of the mysteries of modern life and technology. Recent topics include which is the world's biggest building and why are people using images of flustered-looking owls and the sign-off O RLY all over the internet.
And now for today's gratuitous explosion. In February 1965, the US Army conducted and filmed an experiment simulating the effects of a nuclear bomb using 1 million lb of TNT. Having taken over a remote archipelago of desert islands and surrounded them with old battleships, some lucky devil got to press the red button and make the whole thing go boom. The results are at tinyurl.com/3m2mqq and are truly awe-inspiring. Stay with the video for a couple of minutes, until you get to the footage shot from inside the hull of one of the doomed ships.
