It’s official. Akshay Kumar’s Singh is Kinng, released globally last week, has struck box-office gold. This is especially so in the UK where Kumar has a loyal Punjabi following. The inane massala flick collected almost half a million pounds in its opening weekend and is currently No 6 in the UK Top 10 box-office charts.
Ironically, the film about a hapless Sikh lad who becomes the head of the Australian mafia has not gone down well with some sections of the Punjabi community in India. Some Sikh youths in Amritsar stoned a theatre screening the film as they objected to the film’s stereotypical depiction of Sikhs as a ‘colourful race’. This is despite director Anees Bazmee re-shooting certain scenes which Sikh leaders had initially objected to.
A grand celebration party was held in Mumbai on Monday night. Producer Vipul Shah is on a high and ready to start on his next blockbuster which will be shot in London. Shah will direct ‘London Dreams’, starring Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan. He confirms: “I am now raring to get behind the camera itself. September 14 is going to be the D-day as shooting would kick-start for London Dreams.” Interestingly, the new box-office ‘King Kumar’ is not part of the project.
